With Tropical Storm Debby exiting the state Thursday and with less overall effects than anticipated, all Sumter School District schools will reopen Friday on a one-hour delay.

A district spokeswoman distributed a news release Thursday on Friday’s schedule and also explained that it will be the first day of school for prekindergarten and kindergarten students in the district.

Additionally, district Executive Director of Communication and Community Engagement Shelly Galloway detailed how particular students should handle the one-hour delay.

First, for students who ride the bus, they should report to their bus stops one hour later than usual, she said. Next, for students who are car riders, they should report to their schools one hour later than usual.

Finally, for employees who have not been notified otherwise, they should report to work one hour later than usual. As an example, schools that usually start at 7:40 a.m. will start at 8:40 a.m. instead on Friday.

To help ensure the safety of students and staff the district works in conjunction with emergency management and law enforcement officials when making decisions regarding inclement weather, but realizes it can create challenges for the community, Galloway said. District officials appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during this time, she added.
