With the potential of heavy rain, flooding and high wind gusts as Tropical Storm Debby moves back over South Carolina on Wednesday night and Thursday, Sumter School District has scheduled another eLearning day for Thursday.

A district spokeswoman distributed a news release on Wednesday morning and added that as the district continues to monitor the storm and road conditions, information will be communicated regarding school for Friday.

On eLearning days, schools and office buildings are closed, and all activities – including athletic events and field trips – are canceled, according to district Executive Director of Communication and Community Engagement Shelly Galloway. Because the district is an approved eLearning district, Thursday will not have to be made up, and lessons and assignments will be posted in Schoology. Students will complete eLearning assignments later if they are unable to participate because of power outages, lack of internet service or other barriers, she added.

The district works in conjunction with Sumter County Emergency Management and law enforcement officials when making decisions regarding inclement weather, Galloway said. With hazardous driving conditions created by wind gusts and flooding, the district’s top priority is ensuring the safety of its students, employees, families and bus drivers traveling to and from school, she added.

Also, the district announced that the community bus tour of older schools in need of capital improvement projects scheduled for Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. has been postponed until a later date.
