Updated Aug. 7: Tropical Storm Debby closings, cancellations, changes in Sumter, Clarendon, Lee counties

Because of the threat of Tropical Storm Debby, the following schedule changes have been made:

Aug. 7

SCHOOLS
Sumter School District  has called for Thursday, Aug. 8, to be an eLearning day for all students and staff.  As road conditions are monitored, information will be communicated regarding school on Friday.

On eLearning days, schools and office buildings are closed, and all activities, including athletic events and field trips, are canceled. Because the district is  an approved eLearning district, these days will not have to be made up, and lessons and assignments will be posted in Schoology. Students will complete eLearning assignments later if they are unable to participate due to power outages, lack of internet service, or other barriers.

Morris College campus operations will resume Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m.

All CCTC campuses will be closed Thursday, Aug. 8.  The college will continue to closely monitor the weather and expect to be open for normal business hours on Friday, Aug. 9. Should that decision change, the college  will notify everyone through the Emergency Notification System (text, email, phone call), social media and the college’s website cctech.edu.

GOVERNMENT
The City of Sumter will close offices on Thursday, Aug. 8.  City of Sumter sanitation services will run on a delayed schedule on Thursday. Place trash cans on the curb during the usual time frame of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Swan Lake Iris Gardens will be closed Wednesday-Thursday, Aug. 7-8.

Sumter County Government offices will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 8. City,  county and school district officials met this morning at the Sumter County Emergency Operations Center. A county spokesman said they expect to be open for normal business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9.

HEALTH CARE
All  Tandem Health sites will open at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7. 

Aug. 6

HEALTH CARE
HopeHealth has rescheduled its Manning Reopening and Pharmacy Showcase scheduled for today to the same time next Thursday, Aug. 15.

All Tandem Health sites will close at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 6., the system announced Tuesday morning. 

BUSINESSES
Elephant Ear Gallery is closed today, according to their Instagram account.

Dorr Farms closed its store for today, according to their Instagram account. "We have already received an inch of rain today and the farm is a muddy mess."

The Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce is closed.

All YMCA of Sumter programming is canceled for Thursday, Aug. 6. This includes swim lessons, swim team, gymnastics, pickleball, group exercise and personal training. Kidscape and Nursery will close at noon. Pools will close at 4 p.m. The facility is still open for general use.

The Sumter Farmers Market at USC Sumter will be closed Friday, Aug. 9.

Sumter County Genealogical Society will be closed until 10 a.m. Friday.

GOVERNMENT
Summerton Town Hall will close today, Aug. 6, at 1 p.m. This evening's planning commission meeting has been canceled.

EVENTS
The 2023-2024 Sumter Clarendon Heart Walk Year-End Celebration event has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Aug, 14, at 7:30 a.m. at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Classroom #1.

Aug. 5

SCHOOLS
Clarendon County School District will shift to e-learning Tuesday-Thursday, Aug. 6-8.

Sumter School District has announced that Tuesday-Wednesday, Aug.  6-7, are eLearning days for all students and staff in the district. On eLearning days, schools and office buildings are closed, and all activities, including athletic events and field trips, are canceled. Because Sumter School District is an approved eLearning district, these days will not have to be made up, and lessons and assignments will be posted in Schoology. Students will complete eLearning assignments later if they are unable to participate due to power outages, lack of internet service, or other barriers.

Morris College in Sumter has suspended campus operations for Tuesday, Aug.  6, for  NON-ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL ONLY. Essential Personnel (check with supervisor) please arrive on campus at your regular report time. It has not been decided if the campus will be closed on Wednesday.

Liberty STEAM Charter School, in alignment with Sumter School District, will do eLearning days Wednesday, Aug. 6, and Thursday, Aug. 7. All school and office buildings will be closed, and all activities, including after school, are canceled. These missed in-person days will not have to be made up, and lessons and assignments will be disseminated via email, Class Dojo and Remind. Scholars will complete eLearning assignments later if they are unable to participate due to power outages, lack of internet service or other barriers.

Lee County School District will dismiss elementary schools at 1:30 p.m. today, Aug. 6, and middle and high schools at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 6.  Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 7-8,  have been designated as eLearning days for all students in the district. This means schools and office buildings will be closed, and all activities, including athletic events and field trips are canceled. Because Lee County School District is an approved eLearning district, these days will not have to be made up, and lessons and assignments will be posted in each teacher's virtual classroom. Students will complete eLearning assignments later if they are unable to participate due to power outages, lack of internet service, or other barriers. Lee County School District staff members are expected to be available virtually during normal work hours on Wednesday, Aug. 7, and Thursday, Aug. 8. Updates will be sent via the automated telephone call system, district website, district Facebook page, social media and local media outlets.
