Sumter SPCA is a refuge during Tropical Storm Debby

While some may be evacuating in light of Hurricane Debby, not everyone has considered what to do with their furry friends or how local shelters hold up during heavy rainfall such as is expected this week.

Luckily, according to Sumter SPCA worker Shannan Dault, the Sumter SPCA is above the flood plain and well prepared to weather the storm. The connected My Buddy Boarding Inn already has dogs boarded by owners preparing for an influx of rain.

“I’ll tell you what, our shelter is really one of the most secure places in Sumter,” Dault said. “We’ve got very secure walls. I mean we went through [Hurricane] Hugo, and people brought their animals to us during those times because we have concrete walls.”

When it comes to hurricanes and animals, Dault said it is important to have a plan in place before any disaster. This includes having any pet medication and food prepared in advance alongside having a safe environment at the ready such as a crate and pet bed.

Dault also said residents should keep their eye out for any animals that are in danger from the elements. According to Dault, if anyone sees an animal that needs help, they should try their best to get it to the shelter where it can be boarded.
