Due to the high probability of heavy rain, tropical force winds and severe flooding associated with Tropical Storm Debby, Sumter School District has scheduled home-based eLearning days for Tuesday and Wednesday.

A district spokeswoman distributed a news release on Monday afternoon and added that as the district monitors the storm further information will be communicated regarding the remainder of the week.

On eLearning days, schools and office buildings are closed and all activities – including athletic events and field trips – are cancelled, according to district Executive Director of Communication and Community Engagement Shelly Galloway. Since the district is an approved eLearning district, Tuesday and Wednesday will not have to be made up and lessons and assignments will be posted in Schoology. Students will complete eLearning assignments later if they are unable to participate due to power outages, lack of internet service or other barriers, she added.

The district works in conjunction with Sumter County Emergency Management and law enforcement officials when making decisions regarding inclement weather, Galloway said. With hazardous driving conditions created by wind gusts and flooding, the district’s top priority is ensuring the safety of its students, employees, families and bus drivers traveling to and from school, she added.

In other district news, the district Board of Trustees' Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Committee's meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 7, has been cancelled.
