Funeral services for Katie W. Davis will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Westminster Presbyterian Church (USA), 9124 Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu, with the Rev. Alonza Washington officiating.

Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter. The public may view from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2024, at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter, with the Order of Eastern Star Red Hill Chapter #157 service beginning at 6 p.m.

Katie W. Davis transitioned on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at her residence in Sumter. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Alexander Witherspoon and Lucille Pearson Witherspoon.

Katie W. Davis completed her education at Lincoln High School. In 1953, Katie married Joe Davis Sr., and to this union four children were born: Rosetta, Joe Jr., Clint and Bruce. During this union, Katie joined Westminster Presbyterian Church, USA, Alcolu. She served as an ordained deacon, participated in the Presbyterian Women and contributed to the evangelism, hospitality and nominating committees.

Katie pursued a career in nursing at Tuomey School of Nursing and began working at Tuomey Hospital, Sumter, and retired in 2002. After retirement, she became the owner and operator of GG’s Daycare and co-owned Silverspoons Restaurant. In her community, she was active in the Gamecock Lanes Bowling League and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Red Hill Chapter #157. She was also the Mother Advisor of the Mary B. Thomas Youth Girl Circle, South Carolina, and was awarded the Mother Advisor of the Year. In 2023, Katie was recognized by the South Sumter Neighborhood Association as its Outstanding Citizen.

Katie was preceded in death by parents and husband, Joe Davis Sr.; daughter, Rosetta Davis Burson, and sons Clint Davis and Joe Davis Jr; a grandson, Justin Burson; siblings Lucille W. Reynolds, Lubertha Witherspoon, Mary W. King, Sallie W. Blocker, Ruth W. Brown, Ulysses Witherspoon, Alexander Witherspoon Jr., Robert Witherspoon and Nathan Witherspoon.

Katie is survived by one son, Bruce (Briana) Davis, of Columbia; granddaughters: Neshonda Parr (reared in the home), Rochelsa Burson, Dalaya Jones and Shauna Johnson; grandsons Cortez (Santana) Farmer, Corbin Farmer, Daquan Jones, Jaden Johnson and Deangelon Johnson; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Roberta W. Leverette of Sumter, and brother, Ezekiel Witherspoon of Brooklyn, New York; and a host of other relatives and friends.
