Shirley Hunter Jefferson, 72, transitioned peacefully from this earthly life to eternal rest Tuesday morning, July 16, 2024, at Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia. She was born in Sumter County on Jan. 27, 1952. She was the widow of the late Leroy Jefferson Jr. and the third oldest child of the late Wyatt Hunter and Mary Harris Hunter.
Shirley graduated from Hillcrest High School in Dalzell. She retired from Pilgrim’s Pride, Sumter, in 2015. In her early years, she attended Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized by the Rev. A.D. Dennis.
Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved and cherished each moment with them, especially her children and grandchildren. Shirley loved to cook for them and watch them grow. She loved flowers just like her mother and never saw a flower that she didn’t want a piece of. She also had a love for putting together large puzzles. Even when she was not feeling her best, she maintained a positive perspective on life.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Temeka Pierson, and three of her brothers, James Hunter, Johnny Hunter and Keith Hunter.
Her memory will be cherished by her daughters, Shelby Jefferson of the home, Tasha (Tony) Vaughn of Columbia and Charlene (Darrell) Josey of Elgin, and son-in-law Marcus Pierson of Elgin. Shirley adored her six grandchildren, Jazmyne Jacobs, Mason Vaughn, London Pierson, Lauren Pierson, Darrien Josey and Carli Josey. Shirley also leaves behind one sister, Sallie (Roosevelt) Isaac of Dalzell; five brothers, Wyatt Hunter of Washington, D.C., Gene Hunter of Redding, California, George (Deloris) Hunter of Rembert, Robert (Ernestine) Hunter of Cotton Acres and John (Connie) Hunter of Rembert; and one uncle, Mack Hunter of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday July 23, 2024, at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, 7355 Camden Hwy., Rembert. Pastor Anthony L Taylor Sr. will preside.
The services will be directed by the management and staff of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter.
