Funeral services for Ms. Gladys D. Barno, 83, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church (new sanctuary) – 609 Manning Ave., Sumter. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter. The public viewing will be Monday, July 15, 2024, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church (old sanctuary) – 803 S. Harvin St., Sumter. A. A. Dicks Funeral Home Sullivan Chapel, 6400 N. Main St., Columbia, is in charge of these arrangements.

Ms. Barno was born June 2, 1941, in Sumter to the late Mr. Mack Dingle and Mrs. Claudie Randolph Butler. She departed this life on Monday, July 8, 2024, at Sedgewood Manor Health Care Center in Columbia.

She accepted the Lord, Jesus Christ, as her personal savior at an early age and was a faithful member of the choir at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. She served there diligently for over 50 years until her health declined. Ms. Barno attended the public schools of Sumter County and worked there as a cafeteria aide at Eastern Elementary School. She loved singing, spending time with family and watching Westerns on television. Her favorite Western was “The Rifle Man.” Gladys was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. James Lee Barno Sr., and to this union, five children were born.

Surviving are her children: Shirly (Charles) Frierson and James L. Barno Jr., both of Sumter, Naomi T. (Bobby) Reddick of North Plainfield, New Jersey, and Harold (Binnah) Barno of Sumter; Rosalind Barno predeceased her; a sister, Thelma Bennett, also of Sumter; and a brother, Felix (Daisy) Butler of Hempstead, New York.
