A suspect is in custody in connection to the shooting death of 16-year-old Jayvion Jones.

On Sept. 3, six juveniles were fired upon in a vehicle on Black River Road and Edens Road in Dalzell. Jones was pronounced dead on scene, and another 16-year-old was wounded, according to Mark Bordeaux, public information officer for Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

After identifying the suspect in the shooting, deputies executed a search warrant at the residence of 17-year-old Jonathan Brown of Dalzell. Evidence discovered included fentanyl and a stolen gun. Brown was arrested for trafficking fentanyl and possession of a stolen gun and taken to Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, Bordeaux said.

Investigators were later able to link Brown to the Sept. 3 shooting. He was charged with murder, five counts of attempted murder, discharging firearm into a vehicle while occupied, possession of a stolen pistol, possession of a pistol by a person under 18, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and trafficking in fentanyl, according to Bordeaux.

Brown remains at the detention center and is being held pending a bond hearing before a circuit judge.

An investigation is ongoing.
