Sumter Police Department has arrested a man in connection to an argument-turned-fatal shooting on Sunday night.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, officers responded to the Rhododendron Street area, where they found a vehicle stopped in the intersection and the driver inside with a gunshot wound.

Jeremie Devon Richardson, 40, of Crosswell Drive, the driver, was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, where he later died, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the police department. Next of kin has been notified, and an autopsy has been scheduled by Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

Officers were able to determine the shooting happened outside a residence on Lirope Way and stemmed from an argument between a group of acquaintances and James Christopher Wilson, 38, of Sunhurst Court earlier in the night while the group was out socializing, McGirt said.

Once at Lirope Way, Richardson got into an argument and there was an exchange of gunfire with Wilson, McGirt said. Officers later found Wilson at a King Street residence and took him into custody.

Wilson was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to McGirt. He was taken to Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

An investigation is ongoing.
