Sumter deputies connect with many on National Night Out

The annual 2024 National Night Out for Sumter County was held Tuesday evening, Oct. 8, and deputies volunteered to travel across Sumter County and connect with some of the more than 104,000 residents.

National Night Out was an opportunity for residents to gather in their neighborhoods to express their solidarity and show their partnership against crime. Neighborhood Watch groups are a powerful deterrent to crime, as neighbors look out for one another and share information with law enforcement.

Sumter County Sheriff’s Office patrols 665 square miles and wanted to see as many residents as possible Tuesday evening.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis said, “These deputies care. Every day they work to protect and serve, and even when off duty, they go above and beyond to make a difference. I appreciate their enthusiasm and willingness to give their time to reach out to Sumter County residents.”

Tuesday evening was rewarding for deputies as they met with residents wherever possible. The weather was comfortable, and many residents were on their porches with children playing in their yards.

In addition to meeting with Neighborhood Watch Groups, deputies stopped spontaneously to meet residents and even play with the children. They also gave away fun gifts to the children.

During one encounter, a deputy listened to parents sharing their concern for their teenage son and their desire for him to make wise choices. After the deputies encouraged the parents and the son, they warmly thanked them.

“I wish we could have visited every street in Sumter County, but we want all of our citizens to know they can contact us, and we would be happy to arrange a visit,” Sheriff Dennis said.

Those families and groups who would like to schedule a speaker or a tour of the sheriff’s office should contact Dr. Mark Bordeaux, our public information officer, at mbordeaux@sumtercountysc.gov or call his office number at (803) 436-2034.

If you would like help launching a neighborhood watch, please call( 803) 436-2000, and we will be glad to help.

Sheriff Dennis added, “Our fine citizens are essential in helping us make Sumter County safer.”
