Investigation launched after body found near home in Sumter County 

Sumter County Sheriff's Office has launched an investigation after a body was found outside a county home early Saturday, Oct. 12. 

Mark Bordeaux, public information officer for the sheriff's office, said Sheriff Anthony Dennis was among deputies, command officers and investigators on scene when a call of an unconscious person lying near a Byas Road home came in at 9:49 a.m. on Saturday.

Deputies were joined by Sumter County EMS. It was determined the person had been shot and a vehicle parked in the road belonged to the victim, Bordeaux said. 

Dennis confirmed the shooting and that it may relate to a shooting reported on Duffie Drive at about 2 a.m. the same day. 

An investigation is underway. Sumter County Coroner's Office will release the name of the victim once next of kin is notified.
