CHARLES RAGIN

Charles "Sonny" Ragin, the son of the late Joseph "Charlie" Ragin and Christine Andrews Ragin, was born on Sept. 11, 1936, in Clarendon County. He was the husband of the late Jeanette Zeigler Ragin. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of the 425 Catchall Free and Accepted Mason Lodge in the 70s. He joined Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Manning at an early age. He was a devoted trustee for more than 40 years.

A busy life came to an end on Wednesday morning, Oct. 26, 2005, at the Carolina Health and Rehabilitation Center in Columbia.

He leaves to cherish his memory, two daughters, Kathy C. Bracy of the home and Loretta (James) Brown of Yonkers, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Charles Daimen Ragin of the home, Roslyn (Lloyd) Ward of Somerset, N.J., and Veronica (Jermerll) Ford of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Ruth Mae Wilson of Sumter and Geneva "Gen" Bush of Bronx, N.Y.; six brothers, Emmanuel "Pee Wee" Ragin and Charles Hue "Shimmy" Ragin, both of Sumter, Ezekiel "Zeke" (Ann) Ragin of Bronx, Johnny "Oot" (Ruthie) Ragin of Florence, Wilbur "Butter" (Fayon) Ragin of Baltimore, and Vernell Ragin of Hartford, Conn.; three sisters-in-law, Marilyn Ragin of Sumter, Millie (James) Scott and Faye (Albert) Conyers, both of Paxville; three brothers-in-law, George Willis of Columbia, Deacon James (Geneva) Zeigler and Archie (Beulah) Zeigler, both of Paxville; three aunts, Camilla Andrews Ragin of Umatilla, Fla., Carrie Andrews Allen of Jacksonville, Fla., and Theola Ragin (William) Pearson of Paxville; one uncle, James Ragin of Umatilla; one adopted daughter, Arnetha Salaam of Sumter; one adopted son, Derrick Nelson of Sumter; a special friend, Larry McClary of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ida Lily Ragin Willis and Patricia Ragin; and two brothers, William "Red" Ragin and Weldon Ragin.

Services for Mr. Ragin will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the pastor, Leon Winn, officiating, assisted by the Revs. M.G. Walters and Albertus Smiling and Apostle Larry Carter. Burial will follow in the Rock Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews and flower bearers will be nieces.

A wake service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister, Ruth Mae Wilson, 446 Dogwood Drive.

The funeral procession will leave the home of his sister, Ruth Mae Wilson, 446 Dogwood Drive, at 1:15 p.m.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
