Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a suspect in the homicide of two women found on Puddin Swamp Road earlier this month.
On Wednesday, Sept. 2, deputies discovered the bodies of Lola Hurt, 55, of Lynchburg, and Melany Johnson, 41, also of Lynchburg, along Puddin Swamp Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
Howard “Doug” Coker Jr., 55, also of Lynchburg, was arrested on Thursday, Sept. 17, and charged with two counts of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and first-degree burglary, according to the sheriff’s office.
The agency said Coker and Johnson were parties in an ongoing domestic dispute. Hurt’s relation to either individual was not released.
Sheriff Anthony Dennis said this case is another example of “the ongoing issue of domestic violence.”
“This was a heinous act of violence against two innocent parties,” Dennis said. “The sheriff’s office will continue to seek justice for these victims in this tragic case.”
An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s at (803) 436-2000.
