Sumter police investigation underway after man fatally struck by car

Sumter Police Department is investigating after a man was found dead in the roadway. 

At about 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, officers responded to Mallard Drive, where a man was found lying in the roadway. Information gathered indicated he was struck by a vehicle, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the police department. 

The vehicle and its occupants were located after they called 911, McGirt said. 

The 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin was notified by Sumter County Coroner’s Office, and an autopsy was scheduled. 

Details are limited as officers continue to investigate.
