BISHOPVILLE -- Lucille Murphy King, 99, was born April 1, 1910, to the late Jeff Sr. and Janie Bradshaw Murphy. She died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at her home.
She received her education in the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined St. John AME Church with her parents. After matrimony, she joined her husband at St. Mark Baptist Church. Later in life, she moved her membership to Elizabeth Baptist Church and presently with Mustard Seed Baptist Church. She served in many capacities in the church. The missionary and senior choir ministries were her favorites. However, she was always willing to do whatever she could for the up-building of God's kingdom. She had the honor of being the "Mother of the Church." Mrs. King was also a charter member of Benjamin Chapter No. 346 Order of the Eastern Stars, PHA and was the "Mother of the Chapter."
Mrs. King was married to the late Prince King Sr. God blessed this union with seven children, two (Jerlean K. Benjamin and Fred King) preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by four siblings, Gertrude Murphy, Boyd Murphy Sr., Ethel Scott and Annie Harris.
She was an excellent homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, jigsaw puzzles, fishing and spending quality time with her family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law and friend.
She leaves to share her memories of her smile and love: five devoted children, Boyd (Patricia) King, Prince King Jr. and Rosa K. Williams, all of Bishopville, Mary K. Holloman of Rahway, N.J., and James (Queenie) King of Hillside, N.J.; a brother, Jeff Murphy Jr. of Bishopville; four sisters, Rosa Benjamin of Bishopville, Emma Lee of Raleigh, N.C., Gennie Gregg of Fort Washington, Md., and Mary (Eugene) Benjamin of Columbia; a brother-in-law, Tom Harris of Bishopville; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elizabeth Baptist Church with Pastor Gregory J. Jackson Sr. presiding and Pastor Willie T. Lee, eulogist. Interment will follow in the churchyard cemetery.
