HARRY SANDERS

Posted

Harry Sanders, 79, died Thursday, October 19, 2006 at Tuomey Health Care System, Sumter. Born November 15, 1926 in Rembert, he was the son of the late Hayes Sanders and Hattie Young Sanders. He was also the husband of Mary Kendrick Sanders.

He was educated in the public school system of Sumter County, where he lived for many years before his exodus to Florida, New York, and finally settling in Washington, DC. He worked for many years at the Shoreham Hotel, and retired from The George Washington University Hospital.

He accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church. Later, he moved his membership to Carolina Missionary Baptist Church in Washington, DC, where he served for 50 years. He was a diligent worker serving on various boards such as the Trustee Board, Usher Board and Male Chorus. In June 2000, he moved back to Rembert, where he worshipped at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church serving on the Usher Board until his death.

Harry was an earth angel, affectionately known as "Pops" and "Little Man". He was always willing to give, instead of receiving. He gave of his time, money, resources, and heart to everyone who came in contact with him. No one was a stranger, as everyone he knew became his friend. He helped others, not expecting anything in return, but being satisfied with the pleasure of helping someone in need. Even in his sickness, he still carried the spirit of giving. His lifetime of giving is equivalent to that of the Energizer bunny. He was an indelible imprint in our lives and will remain so in our hearts.

Survivors include: a loving and devoted wife, Mary Kendrick-Sanders; six children, Kelvin Sanders, Sherry Sanders-dSanders), Sabrina Sanders, and Harry Wayne Sanders; nineteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; four sisters, Levenia Heriot and Pauline Herrington, both of New York, Isadore Boykins of Philadelphia, Sallie Tarver of Ohio; one brother, Walter Sanders of Rembert; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Sanders of Rembert, and Willie M. Bolden of Dalzell; one brother-in-law, Gabe Kendrick of New Jersey. He also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, and other sorrowing relatives and friends, but most of all a devoted niece, Dorothy Bolden of Rembert.
