An update on the fatal shooting on Monday, May 27, has been released, and a teenager is in police custody.

A teen wanted in connection to the killing of Tavares Keiwaun McFadden, 32, and injury of his passenger was arrested after being spotted and chased by Sumter Police Department officers.

His name is not being released because of his age, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the police department.

Information gathered by police indicated McFadden was stopped at the traffic light on Green Swamp Road at about 7:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27, when a white sedan drove up alongside and shots were fired before it sped away on South Guignard Drive. Officers arrived to find McFadden’s car crashed nearby. He was pronounced dead at the scene with an apparent gunshot wound, and his passenger, who also suffered a gunshot wound, was treated at a local hospital and has since recovered.

The teenager in custody is the third person charged in connection to McFadden’s death and the injury of his passenger. Two other suspects – Curtis Jefferson, 19, of Mayesville, and Fernando Quintez Adams, 20, of Sumter – were taken into custody on July 10 and charged with murder and attempted murder, McGirt said. Both remain at Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

The teen is charged with murder and attempted murder, McGirt said.

Because he was 16 at the time of the shooting, he has been charged as a juvenile, but the police department has asked that he be charged as an adult. The decision is now left up to Family Court, McGirt said.

An investigation is ongoing.
