George Thomas “Tommy” Self Jr., 67, husband of Beth Batey Self, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, at the MUSC Medical Center in Charleston.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late George Thomas Self and Helen Wragg McLaurin Self.

Tommy was the owner and operator of Gamecock Chemical Company. He was a member of Church of the Holy Comforter Anglican. He was a graduate of Wilson Hall, Wofford College and served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years; two daughters, Batey Self Rourk (Chris) and Anna McLaurin Dolan (Ryan); three grandchildren, George, Grace and Mac; and his brother, Michael W. Self (Denise).

Tommy had a life full of adventure. He flew helicopters in the National Guard and enjoyed scuba diving, snow skiing and golfing. However, his greatest treasure was his family. He was a devoted husband and beloved father to his girls. He dedicated his life to serving others and bringing joy to those who knew him.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at Church of the Holy Comforter Anglican with the Rev. John Sosnowski officiating.

The family will receive friends in the church Parish Hall following the memorial service.
