Carolina Backcountry Homestead at Sumter Museum is inviting young recruits to step into the shoes of a Revolutionary War soldier during Battle in a Box: Become the Reenactor!, an interactive America 250th program designed to bring South Carolina's Revolutionary War history to life.
The program will take place on Saturday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at Carolina Backcountry Homestead on the Sumter Museum campus. Admission is free, but preregistration is requested for planning purposes.
Created for students entering fourth through eighth grades, "Battle in a Box" offers participants the opportunity to experience what life was like for a Continental Army soldier during the American Revolution. Parents are encouraged to stay and participate alongside their children.
During the program, participants will:
- Enlist in the Continental Army
- Experience a soldier intake process
- Learn musket drill instruction
- Take part in historically inspired South Carolina battle scenarios
The event is part of Sumter County's commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and is presented in partnership with Liberty Live and Southern Campaign 1780. Through hands-on activities and immersive learning, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the experiences of the men and women who lived through the Revolutionary era.
"History comes alive when participants can step into the role of those who experienced it," said Annie Rivers, executive director of the museum. "This program gives students a fun and memorable opportunity to learn about South Carolina's Revolutionary War history by becoming part of the story themselves."
