Temple Sinai Jewish History Center combines Jewish musical heritage and Anne Frank Exhibition this fall

Posted

Temple Sinai Jewish History Center, a permanent institution of Sumter Museum, will bring together music, history and education this fall with a special concert and a new exhibition focused on Anne Frank.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m., Temple Sinai will present "Shir Ami: Song of Our People," a free concert celebrating the rich musical heritage of the Jewish people. The program will feature mezzo-soprano Rachel Calloway and Amernet Quartet, with melodies from the Sephardic tradition, music that would have been familiar to the synagogue's earliest congregants.

Guests are invited to arrive at 6 p.m. for a pre-concert reception, with refreshments and an opportunity to explore Temple Sinai Jewish History Center and its exhibits.

The pre-concert reception, also free of charge, will provide a special opportunity to preview Reading & Writing with Anne Frank, which will be on special display at Temple Sinai Jewish History Center from Oct. 7 through Nov. 27. Designed especially for young visitors, the exhibition from the Anne Frank Center at University of South Carolina offers a glimpse into the personal life of the Frank family while highlighting Anne Frank's extraordinary love of writing.

The concert is free and open to the public thanks to a Connected Communities grant from Central Carolina Community Foundation.

The exhibition offers families and young visitors an opportunity to connect Anne Frank's story with their own interests, dreams and creativity. It will be available for viewing Wednesday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults ages 18-64, $2 for students ages 6-17 and seniors 65+ and free for children age 5 and under.

"Shir Ami: Song of Our People" and Reading & Writing with Anne Frank offer two different ways to explore Jewish history and heritage - through the enduring power of music and through the words and experiences of a young writer.

Regular admission fees apply with exception of pre-concert viewing. Sumter Museum members can attend for free.
