Sumter United Ministries' annual Gear Up for Learning 2026 project is well under way as summer break begins for area students.
The ministry's community outreach program supports all Sumter County public and charter schools.
This year, the most-requested item from area schools is geared toward safety.
SUM wrote in a news release that it reached out to school guidance counselors and principals for a wish list of items, and the overwhelming request was for clear book bags.
"Due to the extensive use of technology now, we wanted to focus our efforts on the specific needs of our local schools to support the best learning environment for our students," according to the release. "Thus, we are encouraging donations of clear book bags to support the safety and security of our children, teachers and staff. We can also accept regular book bags for distribution where permitted."
The ministry said that despite the new technology in use, all students will still need traditional school supplies.
Schools asked for these items to be donated:
Clear book bags
Pencils (traditional, sharpened)
Pens (ball point; blue or black)
3-ring binders (1-inch, 2-inch and 3-inch sizes)
Black-and-white composition notebooks
Highlighters
Dividers for the 3-ring binders
Colored pencils
Notebook paper (regular or college ruled)
Crayons – 16 or 24 count
Pocket folders with prongs
Glue sticks
Construction paper
Single spiral notebook
Primary writing journals
Erasers
Index card packages
Mechanical pencils
If individuals, churches, civic groups or businesses would like to sponsor a specific item, call (803) 775-0757 option 5, or email volunteer@sumterunitedministries.org.
"Any donation would be appreciated and a blessing to a student in need," the ministry said. "Could you buy a pack of crayons or pencils next time you go shopping? Could you purchase a few extra binders or some packages of notebook paper when you are out and about? Maybe you could do more … every item counts and means the world to the one student receiving it! God will use one glue stick, a package of index cards or a case of pens for His glory. This project is a way for so many to take part and to provide a smile for a student returning to class without a book bag or other needed supplies. We are excited about this opportunity! We appreciate your willingness to partner with us in this worthwhile project for our local community."
