SCDNR investigating Canada goose mortalities in Charleston area

Posted

CHARLESTON — South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is investigating a die-off involving Canada geese in the Charleston and Mount Pleasant area. Avian influenza is suspected, and a specimen has been submitted for testing to help determine the cause.

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, occurs naturally in wild bird populations across North America. With seasonal bird migration underway, cases of avian influenza can increase. While the virus can circulate among wild birds, the cause of this particular die-off has not yet been confirmed.

SCDNR encourages the public to avoid handling sick or dead wild birds and to keep pets away from affected birds.

For information about avian influenza detections and its occurrence in wildlife, visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS). For information about potential human health risks and precautions, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

SCDNR will continue to monitor the situation as additional information becomes available.
