Older adults in Sumter now have access to a proven program that helps prevent type 2 diabetes - at no cost for those who qualify. The YMCA of Sumter is offering the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program, which supports seniors in making small, realistic lifestyle changes that significantly impact health and independence.

The program is free for individuals who qualify based on a blood glucose test showing prediabetes and who are enrolled in Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan.

"Preventing diabetes is not only possible, but it can also be life-changing for older adults," said Lisa Burbage, program spokesperson. "This program gives people the support, tools and encouragement they need to stay healthy, active and independent."

Participants receive:

- Coaching for healthier eating

- Support to increase physical activity

- Tips for small, sustainable habits

- A welcoming group environment

"These are simple, achievable changes that can make a real difference in everyday life," Burbage said.

Preventing diabetes can help older adults:

- Maintain mobility and independence

- Reduce pain and improve sleep

- Lower risk of heart disease

- Boost mood and energy

The program is being offered at the YMCA of Sumter, 510 Miller Road. An information session will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, at 10 a.m. to explain program details and allow participants to register if interested.
