JOSHUA MCQUILLA

Posted

Joshua McQuilla, 75, the son of the late Hosea McQuilla and Janie Green McQuilla, transitioned from his earthly life into eternity Thursday, April 4, 2024, at his home. Joshua was born June 24, 1948, in Paxville. Mr. McQuilla began his education in the Clarendon County Public School System and completed his education, graduating from Lincoln High School in Sumter County with the Class of 1968.
Mr. McQuilla worked with family members on the farm for many years and continued to work part-time on the farm while also pursuing a career at Santee Print Works, until his retirement. Joshua also had a passion for helping family, friends and neighbors with small home repairs. Joshua mowed lawns and proudly commented on his perfection by stating that, "People knew I was there."
Mr. McQuilla was a member of Chapel AME Church of Paxville. Joshua had strayed away for many years, then he returned to chapel, reuniting with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Joshua worked with the grounds crew, giving them tips on equipment repair and maintenance and planting shrubs around the church for approximately 20 years. Joshua only gave up the physical labor due to his failing health, but he would go down and watch the team work. Joshua had to overcome many obstacles and challenges early in life. However, he turned around when he rededicated his life to Christ.
Mr. McQuilla was preceded in death by his daughter, Cherise J. McQuilla-Mitchell; sisters, Fannie McQuilla-Dukes and Katie McQuilla-Leach; and brothers, Hosea, James and Willie M. McQuilla.
Mr. McQuilla leaves three grandchildren, Katelyn A. Mitchell, Sydney C. Mitchell and Robert J. Mitchell, all living in Bowie, Maryland; and two sisters, Janie (Larry) Harris and Julia Gregg; one like daughter, Vernessa LeSane; and one nephew, Julian Harris, all of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church members and friends to cherish his memories as well.
In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting no visitation at the home.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, April 12, 2024, at Chapel AME Church, 1257 McLeod Road, Paxville, with the Rev. Roberta C. Montgomery, pastor.
