SUMTER MUSIC CLUB
Sumter Music Club, formerly known as The Woman's Afternoon Music Club, met on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. Members now include men. The club, which dates back to 1917, awards piano, vocal and instrumental scholarships for Sumter County residents through competition each spring.
New members this year are: Emmett Anglin, Mac Atkinson, Heather Morrison Atkinson, Mark Burns, Christina Infelise, Eileen Rumph, Regina Stewart and Stephen Winn. Returning members after leave of absence are Anne Galloway and Sonja Sepulveda.
President Katherine Bledsoe chaired the business meeting for members. Guests attending were Michael and Krystin Baier and Debbie Shelley.
Floride McKoy introduced the hymn of the month, "Jesus Christ Our Lord," for the membership to learn and sing.
A lovely program of piano and strings music was provided. Jane Luther Smith, pianist, gave a short lecture on the composer and played four selections by Frederick Chopin in the styles of largo, waltz allemande and a prelude. Krystin Baier, violin, and Michael Baier, cello, played two duets: "Concertante" by Jacques-Fereol Mazas and "Meditation" from the opera "Thais" by Jules Massenet.
Hostesses providing refreshments were Susan Nethercutt, Pam King, Floride McKoy and Patti Croft.
