Carlisle “Carl” Vance Livingston Jr., 84, passed away on Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, following a brief illness, with his family by his side.

Carl was born on Feb. 7, 1942, and was a long-term resident of Sumter, graduating from Hillcrest High School. Carl later attended Clemson University, graduating in 1965. While at Clemson he was a member of the Numeral Society fraternity and affectionately known as “Monk” by his many friends. Following college, Carl served his country for four years in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Langley AFB in Hampton, Virginia.

After completing his military service, Carl returned to Sumter and began a long career in real estate. He was the owner of Oakland Realty, which he operated until his retirement. Throughout his career, Carl was active in the Sumter community, serving on the Board of Trustees of Wilson Hall School, the Sumter Board of Realtors and the Shaw-Sumter Community Council. He was also a dedicated member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.

Outside of work, one of Carl’s great pleasures was golf. He was a long-time member of Sunset Country Club and Carolina Lakes Golf Club, spending many enjoyable days on the course with good friends and his sons.

While stationed at Langley AFB, Carl met and married his beloved wife, Johnnie, spending 48 years together until her death in 2018. Together, they raised two sons and built a life in Sumter. Those who knew Carl well will remember his warm and approachable nature, his good humor, tendency towards thriftiness and genuinely kind heart.

Surviving are his two sons, Carlisle Vance Livingston III (Lindsey) and Joshua Woods Livingston (Rankin), both of Columbia; five grandchildren, Carlisle Vance Livingston IV, Madeline Lewis Livingston, Mary Russell Livingston, Margaret “Maggie” Rankin Livingston and Joshua Woods Livingston Jr.; and his sister, Sally Updyke of Charleston, S.C.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Carlisle and Jane Livingston; his wife, Johnnie Spraberry Livingston; his sisters, Sue Bellman and Joan St. Romain; and his brother, Bobby Livingston.
