Sumter Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that left a 45-year-old man dead near the intersection of Council and Bartlette streets on Friday afternoon.
Officers arrived on scene after the shooting happened shortly 3 p.m. on Friday and found the body of victim in the roadway on Council Street, according to a news release from the police department.
As of Friday afternoon, the name of the victim had not been released, pending notification of the family.
The release states that a suspect, 74-year-old Nathan Smoot McBride, of 205 Council St., was arrested at his home a short time after the shooting and was charged with murder.
Circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear at this time as detectives continue to investigate.
