Sumter County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a man in connection to a fatal shooting in Rembert on Saturday, Oct. 18.

At about 3:44 p.m., deputies responded to a shooting call on Louis Circle in Rembert, where they found Rodney Lavern China, 51, of Sumter County deceased, according to Mark Bordeaux, public information officer for the sheriff's office.

Witnesses told investigators that a verbal dispute between China and Quinshaun Dais, 38, of Louis Circle, escalated into a physical altercation, according to Bordeaux. During the altercation, Dais reportedly fired several shots, striking and killing China.

Dais was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, Bordeaux said. He was transported to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center, where he remains pending a bond hearing.

An autopsy will be performed on Monday, Oct. 20, at Medical University of South Carolina, according to a news release from Sumter County Coroner's Office.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis said the shooting is isolated.

"This was totally avoidable and unnecessary.  It was an argument that could have remained civil. Instead, the argument turned into assault, and the suspect then resorted to deadly force," Dennis said. "A life was lost and families forever changed. People must learn to communicate and never resort to gun violence."

Sumter County Coroner's Office and Sumter County Sheriff's Office are investigating, and next of kin has been notified.
