The University of South Carolina Sumter is proud to announce Will Thompson as the new head coach of the Fire Ants baseball program. Thompson becomes only the third head coach in the program's history, which began in 2007.
A familiar face to Fire Ants fans, Thompson played for USC Sumter during his collegiate career and has served as the program's associate head coach for several years. Following the retirement of longtime head coach Tim Medlin, Thompson stepped into the role of interim head coach, continuing to lead the team with dedication and vision.
USC Sumter Athletic Director Dr. Age Cataldo shared her enthusiasm for the appointment.
"Coach Thompson embodies the passion and history that is Fire Ants Baseball," she said. "From his early days as a standout player to his leadership as associate and interim head coach, he has consistently demonstrated his commitment and a deep understanding of what makes this program special. There is no one more prepared or more passionate to lead us into the next chapter. We're proud to have him at the helm and excited for what's ahead."
Coach Thompson expressed his gratitude and excitement about the opportunity:
"It's an incredible honor to be named head coach of the program that helped shape me as both a player and a person," the new head coach said. "USC Sumter Baseball means a great deal to me, and I'm committed to continuing the tradition of excellence that's been built here. I'm excited to lead this team and help our student-athletes grow on and off the field."
Thompson brings a deep understanding of the Fire Ants' culture and a commitment to excellence both on and off the field. His leadership marks a new chapter for USC Sumter Baseball, building on a legacy of competitive success and player development.
