Thomas Kenneth Palka, 63, beloved husband of Helen Hutto-Palka, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 30, 2024, in Sumter, leaving behind a legacy of service, love and dedication to his community.
Thomas was born Oct. 22, 1960, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Walter John Palka and Emmy Magdalena Palka.
Thomas was a graduate of Hillcrest High School Class of 1978. He went on to Sumter Area Technical College to complete a degree in electronics. He worked various technical positions in the area but always had a boundless love for firefighting.
Thomas served as a volunteer firefighter with the Sumter Fire Department Dalzell Station #6 for an extraordinary 41 years. His commitment to the safety and well-being of his neighbors exemplified his selfless spirit and unwavering bravery. His dedication to the fire department was matched only by his faith and devotion to his church. Thomas was a cherished member of Dalzell Methodist Church, where his presence will be deeply missed.
A man of many talents, Thomas was known throughout Sumter for his remarkable ability to fix anything. Whether it was a broken appliance, a struggling engine, or a weary heart, Thomas always found a way to mend it. His skillful hands and kind heart were a blessing to all who knew him.
The community of Sumter has lost a pillar of strength, a man whose life was a testament to service, faith and love. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Thomas leaves behind his beloved wife, Helen, who stood by his side through all of life's joys and challenges. He is also survived by his son, Andrew, his wife Blair, and their son Maverick, his daughter, Theresa, and her husband Brent. Thomas's family was his pride and joy, and his love for them was boundless.
A celebration of Thomas’s life will be held at Dalzell Methodist Church on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Josh Colvin and Chaplain Capt. David Bagwell officiating.  
A graveside service will follow on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery, 1910 Camden Rd, Vance.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 5, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
Memorials in honor of Thomas may be made to the Dalzell Methodist Church, PO Box 85, Dalzell, SC 29040, or the Dalzell Fire Department Station 6, 3211 Frierson Road, Dalzell, SC 29040. These are organizations that were dear to his heart and to which he dedicated so much of his life.
