Help support area veterans and maybe win some cash yourself through a Sumter realty group's fundraiser.
Advantage Realty Group is hosting a 50/50 Fundraiser, with half of the money from the effort going to Hidden Wounds' food drive and the other half going to a lucky ticketholder.
TJ Green with the realty group is helping to spearhead the effort and said this is the third year a fundraiser will be held by the group and the second consecutive year that Hidden Wounds will benefit. But this is the first year it will involve a 50/50 raffle. The previous group assisted was Sumter United Ministries. Green said the agents' goal is to raise $5,000 total.
Tickets cost $1 each, and the winner will be chosen Saturday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. You can buy tickets at the group's office, 2573 Broad St., or scan the attached QR code with your phone.
Don Cowan, administrative broker with the realty group, said the Sumter Board of Realtors organized the food drive, and the realty group thanked the board in its flyer for the drive and supporting area veterans.
Hidden Wounds' mission is "to bring combat veterans together to strengthen, to share and to improve their lives; to empower them to make choices using biblical principles; to heal themselves and enable them to help other veterans."
The group's branch in downtown Sumter provides free resources for veterans, including rides to appointments, mental health assistance, a food pantry, payment toward overdue bills and housing, according to previous Item reporting. Veterans can spend time there with each other or relax by themselves with a book, coffee, snacks and more at 21 S. Washington St.
Cowan said after the fundraiser, agents will use half of the money to shop for food for Hidden Wounds, with input from the organization about its most-requested food pantry items.
