Sumter Senior Services will host a community drive-through food box distribution for Sumter County on Saturday, Sept. 19. The event will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Sumter County Civic Center or until all the boxes have been given out.

SSS Executive Director Gail Wilson said, "The fresh fruit and vegetable box distribution is open to the general public of Sumter County and IDs will be checked to make sure they are residents of Sumter County." There is no income requirement.

Wilson added that there will be a two-box limit per vehicle. Each box contains a week's worth of food for a family.

The food distribution will be contactless in accordance with social distancing guidelines. Attendees will remain in their cars with the windows closed, and volunteers will place the food boxes directly in their trunks. For additional health and safety concerns, no one will be allowed to walk up or receive food on foot.

Wilson said, "The distribution is first come, first served, rain or shine. There will be enough boxes to serve 1,000 people."
