Sumter police seek public help in non-fatal shooting investigation

The Sumter Police Department is investigating a non-fatal shooting incident that occurred Sunday morning.

According to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the department, 29-year-old Jaquavius Brown, of Rembert, and his 24-year-old girlfriend, of Sumter, were leaving IHOP at around 5 a.m. when they were approached by an unknown man and woman.

The man began to argue with Brown before pulling a gun and firing, McGirt said. The duo then drove off in a black sedan.  

Brown was transported to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital where he was treated and then released. No other injuries were reported, McGirt said.
