Ex-Sumter police officer in custody on misconduct in office charge for alleged solicitation, SLED says

 A former Sumter police officer, who spent nearly three years on the force,  is in custody after allegedly committing misconduct in the office for two years.

Darren Lee McCain, 30, of Pinewood, was arrested and charged with misconduct in office on Tuesday, June 25.

Between  Jan. 24, 2022, and April 16, 2024, McCain allegedly contacted multiple women and solicited sex in exchange for money, all while working for Sumter Police Department as a police officer, according to SLED. McCain obtained contact information of the women through his role as an officer.

Sumter Police Department requested SLED conduct the investigation, during which McCain admitted to the acts and evidence was found in his cellphone, according to SLED.

McCain was booked at Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center on Tuesday.

McCain began working for the police department on Sept. 8, 2021, and his last day was April 17, 2024, according to the police department.
