Sumter police search for missing mother, son

The Sumter Police Department seeks the public's help in locating a missing mother and son.

According to the police department, Sophia Vandam, 20, and her son, Matayo, 2, both of Wilson Street, were last seen on June 24 in Beaufort, South Carolina, their former residence, before driving back to Sumter.

Family members have not heard from Sophia since then, and law enforcement has not been able to make contact with her. However, her car was located at their Sumter home on Wilson Street, the department said.

It is unclear where they might have gone, if they are riding with someone or walking.

Anyone who sees or knows the whereabouts of Sophia and Matayo Vandam are asked to call the Sumter Police Department immediately at (803) 436-2700.
