The Sumter Police Department seeks the public’s help to locate a Sumter man, considered armed and dangerous, in connection to a Tuesday night shooting that left one person dead and another injured.
According to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the police department, the shooting occurred after 9:45 p.m. in the Circle K parking lot located at Broad Street and Alice Drive.

Officers found Tyrell Javon Scarborough, 21, of Carolina Avenue, and a 20-year-old woman at the scene, McGirt said. Scarborough was pronounced dead at the scene while the woman was transported to an area hospital and is expected to survive.
Justice Dymel Peoples, 23, of Porter Street, was identified as the suspect, according to McGirt. An initial investigation indicated Scarborough got a ride to the Circle K to meet with one of the victims before an argument began and shots were fired. Peoples then fled the scene behind a nearby business, McGirt said.
A witness, with a young child, was also fired on but was not injured, McGirt said.
Next of kin has been notified by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy has been scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, according Coroner Robbie Baker.
Anyone who sees Peoples or knows where he could be is asked to call the Sumter Police Department at (803) 436 – 2700. Tips can also be given anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, logging onto www.P3tips.com or downloading the P3 Tips app for mobile devices.
