A Sumter man has been arrested and charged after reportedly pointing a firearm and threatening to shoot while in the presence of minors.

Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call of a disturbance involving a firearm on Green View Parkway at about 10:59 a.m. on Friday, June 6.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Nikolas Steven Kirchner-Prola, left the scene before  deputies arrived, according to Mark Bordeaux, public information officer with the sheriff's office.

Witnesses told investigators that Kirchner-Prola pointed a gun at multiple individuals and threatened to shoot them. He allegedly held one family member at gunpoint and forced another to enter the home to retrieve someone, threatening to shoot the hostage in the head if his demands were not met, according to Bordeaux.

There were two juveniles present at the time of the incident, Bordeaux told The Item.

A family member emerged from the residence armed, which prompted Kirchner-Prola to flee the scene while another relative was on the phone with dispatch.

After a regional law enforcement bulletin was released, Kirchner-Prola was located and arrested in Georgia, where he is being held awaiting extradition to South Carolina.

He is charged with pointing and presenting a firearm at a person, according to Bordeaux.

An investigation is ongoing.
