A deputy with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a shooting incident in Pinewood Saturday.
The deputy responded to the 200 block of East Fulton Street about 9:40 a.m. after law enforcement was advised a person threatened to kill a family member. According to Deputy Adrienne Sarvis, public information officer for the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, the subject assaulted and overpowered the deputy during a verbal exchange, causing the deputy to discharge his firearm, injuring the subject.
The subject, a male, was airlifted to a hospital for treatment to injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening.
The deputy, identified as Sr. Cpl. Nelson Roasrio, was treated for injuries at a medical facility and was released.
The sheriff's office, per standard protocol, has requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate this incident.
SLED confirmed the agency is investigating the incident.
Rosario, who has been with the sheriff's office since January 2016 and had law enforcement experience prior to his employment in Sumter, has been put on administrative duty, meaning he will not perform his normal duties on patrol while SLED conducts its investigation.
"I feel confident that Sr. Cpl. Rosario acted appropriately in the situation given the circumstances," Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said.
The sheriff's office is also conducting an internal investigation into the incident.
According to the state agency, this is the fifth officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2021. In 2020, there were 49 statewide, including one in Sumter County, which involved the fatal shooting of a deputy by a man who was also killed.
