Social media video shows man slapped after using racial slur in Sumter Applebee's; Police investigating

Sumter Police are investigating a fight reported at about 3 p.m. Thursday at Applebee’s on Broad Street stemming from a man being slapped after reportedly using a racial slur.
In a video that was circulating on social media but has since been taken down from community Facebook groups, it appears a birthday party ended in a sour confrontation between a group of people. A Black man can be seen and heard saying, “Let’s go outside,” and then struck a white man several times in the head moments after the white man used a racial slur. The altercation continued when the Black man appeared to continue hitting the white man after an employee tried to verbally intervene.
An employee then directed the white man and his party to leave the restaurant.
“Officers are continuing to gather information in this incident to determine what led to the argument between two male patrons,” said Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department. “A portion of the altercation being widely shared on social media shows a confrontation where one of the men uses a racial slur before he is hit by the other. No injuries were reported.”
McGirt declined to confirm whether charges have been or will be filed. This is a developing story.
