Another trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol was suspended after an alleged violation of department policy.
Cpl. Matthew R. Nix was placed under suspension without pay on Aug. 3 for allegedly taking money from a person during a public safety checkpoint in Sumter County on July 29, SCDPS said. Cpl. James C. Walsh was also accused of the currency seizure and suspended without pay.
SCDPS requested that the State Law Enforcement Division investigate the matter and will conduct an internal investigation through the SCDPS Office of Professional Responsibility upon completion of SLED's investigation.
Welsh has been with the state highway patrol since 2014. Nix, who was assigned to the highway patrol’s Central Evidence Facility, has been with SCHP since 2005.
