Police investigating fatal shooting

Sumter Police Department officers are investigating a fatal shooting at Poplar Square Apartments on Miller Road.

Police and emergency officials responded to the apartment complex after receiving a shots-fired call at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday. A 23-year-old man was found unresponsive in an outside area of one of the buildings, and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of the family.

Police are currently following possible leads in the case.
