Playoff hopes for Wilson Hall could lie with win over Heathwood Hall

A football season that started off with a lot of promise for Wilson Hall has been stifled the last few weeks. The opportunity to make the SCISA 3A state playoffs is still there for the Barons, and a win over Heathwood Hall on Friday at Spencer Field could go a very long way to making that happen.

"I think they know what's at stake." WH head coach Adam Jarecki said of his players. "We're potentially playing for third-place (in Region I) if we win. We've got to win though if we have any aspirations of making the playoffs."

While the 3A classification will still have eight teams in the playoffs, it split the 11 teams into regions this year after several years where each of the teams faced one another during the regular season and the top eight made the playoffs.

However, only the top three teams from each region are guaranteed playoff spots. The final two teams will be selected on an at-large basis, meaning one of the regions could have five teams and the other three. The teams will then be seeded 1-8.

Wilson Hall will be entering the game after an unexpected bye week. It was scheduled to play host to Thomas Sumter Academy, but the game was cancelled as the Generals were facing injury issues.

The Barons spent the week getting back to the basics and to the point where they won their first two games, but are now 3-3 overall. They were also trying to get healthy.

"We did a lot of fundamental work," Jarecki said. "we were banged up, we had guys out with injuries, quarantined. It was good we didn't necessarily have a game. We were supposed to get those (quarantined) players back before the game Friday.

"We did a lot of defensive drills, went back to some of our preseason stuff. We spent a lot of time on us."

The Barons are 1-3 in region play, coming off a 31-0 loss to Ben Lippen two weeks ago. Heathwood Hall is 5-3 overall and 2-1 in region play. A Wilson Hall win could set up the possibility of a 3-way tie for third between Heathwood, Ben Lippen and Wilson Hall.

Jarecki said beating Heathwood will not be an easy task.

"We've got to do things right this week, no doubt," he said. We have to have a little sense of urgency. We've got to get a win to have playoff hope.

"We've got to take care of the ball, eliminate penalties. We've got to do what we do and try to do it well."
