Officers seek information in death of Sumter man; reward is available

UPDATE:  Thomas Brooks, who is wanted for questioning, is in custody after turning himself in. No further information is available. 

The Sumter Police Department is offering a $2,500 reward in connection to the death of man found lying in a roadway Tuesday night. 

According to Tonyia McGirt, public information office for the department, officers responded to a call after midnight Tuesday to the 100 block of Carolina Avenue. Stevy Evand Pleasant, 57, of Dixie Drive, was found lying in the road near a driveway.

He was discovered by a driver who administered first aid until first responders arrived. Pleasant was taken to a Columbia hospital where he later died, McGirt said.

The injuries treated by medical staff appear to have been inflicted by another person or people, McGirt said. Initial information in the case is limited.

Officers are working to determine Pleasant’s locations and interactions Tuesday night before he was found.
