Joseph Mixon, 88, husband of Varnette McKenzie Mixon, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, at his home in Sumter.
Born Aug. 14, 1936, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Roy Mixon and the late Vonnie Reed Mixon.  He attended Hebron School. Mr. Mixon worked for many years at Williams Furniture Co. and retired from Georgia-Pacific.  He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and served his community as an auxiliary police officer. He loved the Lord and was faithful and dependent on the Lord in all of life’s situations.  He loved going to church and attended the Freewill Baptist Church of Pentecostal Faith, Midland Pentecostal Holiness Church and Grace Full Gospel Church.  He served in many capacities, including deacon, song leader and Sunday School teacher. He was a loving husband and father.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years; two children, Marie Rogers (Jimmy) and Gerald Mixon, all of Sumter; two grandchildren, Jay Rogers and McKenzie Rogers Ortiz (Tito); two great-grandchildren, Harlowe Rogers and Benjamin Rogers; a brother, Roy Leverne Mixon (Bonnie) of Cusaac’s Crossroads; and a sister, Elise Smiley of Lake City.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Marcus Rogers; and siblings, Maney Bell Mixon, Dorothy Wright, Regina Yarborough, Vivaree Bryant and Ronnie Mixon.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Stacey Floyd, the Rev. Seth Cowart and the Rev. Clyde Chan officiating.  Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Rogers, Carroll Cole, Will Anderson, Patrick Dillinger, Jay Rogers and Tito Ortiz.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
