James “Sambo” Herbert Frye Jr., 88, husband of the late Edith Delores Griffin Frye, passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, at the home of his son.
Born Dec. 26, 1935, in Florence, he was the son of the late James Herbert Frye Sr. and Lottie Louise Floyd Frye. He was employed as a welder for B.L. Montague for 22 years. He was of the Pentecostal faith. Sambo loved his family, he loved his Lord, and he lived to fish. He was the example of God’s grace and enjoyed all of life’s simple pleasures. He longed to see his Lord, his family and the woman he loved like no other, his Edith, but to do so, he had to leave the rest of his loved ones with many, many wonderful memories.
Survivors include two children, James Frye (Michelle) and Ann Poston (Donnie); grandchildren, Brittany Smith (Brandon), Andrew Frye, Heather Lee (Kenny), Dylan Yates (Alyssa), Justin Yates, Payton Frye and Maria Poston (Skylar); 11 great-grandchildren; and a special fur baby, Buddy.
He was preceded in death by siblings Lorine Powell, Annette Frierson, Ted Lavell Frye, Daniel Frye, Jeff Frye and Jinks Frye.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Benny Williams, the Rev. Eddie Fleming and the Rev. Greg Pressley officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Children and grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his son, 2235 Nettles Road.
