On Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, Harriet Pauline Jones Barrineau Crosby went to be with Jesus and reunite with family and friends who were waiting for her. She was born Dec. 26, 1954, in Sumter and lived here most of her life. Harriet also fell in love with Charleston and lived there a few happy years. Her final few years were spent near her daughter in Harker Heights, Texas. Her parents were the late "Jack" and Rose Jones, to whom she was devoted. Harriet was no doubt thrilled to see her brothers in heaven, Jack and Henry, and her BFF, Stephanie Shuler, who all went before her. Harriet graduated from Sumter High in 1973 and Carolina Tech in 1990. She worked as a secretary for the City of Sumter for 19 years and felt that her friends and co-workers were her family. They helped her grieve when she had to bury a parent or brother. They rejoiced with her when each new grandchild was born. They showed compassion when she was ill. She felt supported in every aspect of her life because of these friends.
Harriet was proud to have been married to Stephen P. Barrineau for 10 hopeful years before they divorced and remained lifelong friends. Harriet always felt that the greatest accomplishment in her life was giving birth to her three beloved children, Stephen Lael Barrineau, Damien Richard Barrineau and Leah Morris Shine. She thought she knew no greater love than hers for her children, until she was blessed with her children's children, who are Nate, Laney, Evan and Ash Barrineau, Garrett and Aubrey Barrineau and Roman and Loyal Morris.
Finally, God blessed Harriet with the love of her life, the late James Henry Crosby. They married in Sumter and lived happily ever after. He truly cherished her and showed her what pure love could be. But even Jimmy's love came second to her love for Jesus Christ. She knew Jesus all of her life, thanks to her Daddy's teachings. She knew that Jesus loved her enough to die for her, and for this she praised him daily. For it was through His love for her that she was able to love those around her. She will be missed.
