Former Sumter man, 23, wanted in New Year's Eve shooting

The Sumter Police Department seeks public help after a shooting on New Year’s Eve left one dead.

According to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the department, officers responded to a shooting call at a Hampton Avenue residence around 7 p.m. Saturday. Officers found Channing Goodman, 46, of the residence, wounded in the front yard. He was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A warrant was issued for Amani Jalik Zahquad Kennedy, 23, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, who was a former resident of Sumter.

Upon an initial investigation, Goodman was trying to break up a fight between two women when he was reportedly shot by Kennedy, McGirt said.

Kennedy, a family member and one of the women involved in the fight left the scene in a car before officers arrived, McGirt said.

An investigation is ongoing.
