Charles Burgess "Scooter" James Jr., beloved husband for nearly 53 years of Janet Hill James, passed away on April 19, 2024, in Sumter, at the age of 75. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather.
Scooter was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, where he made a profession of faith as a child. He was a 1966 graduate of Edmunds High School and 1972 graduate of the Baptist College of Charleston, earning a degree in business administration. While attending, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
He dedicated 42 years of his career to Sumter Insurance Group as a senior insurance specialist, specializing in church insurance. He was also a respected member of the community, serving as president of the Independent Insurance Agents, Sumter Chapter, and president of the Sumter Sertoma Club. He was honored as the Sumter Sertoman of the Year in 1974-75. He also served as president of the HOA board at Deerfield Courtyard.
Scooter found joy in being in the swamp, hunting and fishing and also attending Thursday Night Supper Club gatherings. His greatest joy was as "Pop Pop," proudly loving and supporting his seven grandchildren in their various sporting events and activities.
Scooter will be deeply missed by his wife, Janet; son, Charles Burgess “Tripp” James, III, and wife, Becky of Summerton; daughter, Jacquelyn James “Lynn” Galloway, and husband, Clint of Sumter; grandchildren, Sara Rebecca James, Wells Kemper James, Charles Burgess James IV “Beau”, Clinton Brogdon Galloway, Charles Milling Galloway, James Kemper Galloway and Mary Jacquelyn Galloway; brother, Roy Milling James (Kim) of Mt. Pleasant, and sister, Betsy James Reynolds (Phillip) of Summerton.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Burgess “Foots” James Sr., and mother, Elizabeth Milling “Libby” James.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Phillip Reynolds officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, April 21,  2024, at the home of his daughter, 2865 Windmill Drive from 4 to 6 p.m.
Pallbearers will include Brogdon Galloway, Milling Galloway, Roy James, James Reynolds, Benny Galloway, Dr. Al Jordan, and Robert Wilder. The members of the Thursday Night Supper Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Wilson Hall or Clarendon Hall in memory of Scooter James.
Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
