SUMTER - Alford Burgess Lemmon, widow of Ernest Lemmon, died Jan. 4, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 29, 1923, in the Gable community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Lizzie McFadden Burgess. She attended Melina Parochial School, graduated from Lincoln High School in Sumter and attended Morris College. She became a certified nursing assistant and cosmetologist. She worked at Tuomey for many years and owned and operated a hair salon located on her property. At an early age, she accepted Christ and became a member of Melina Presbyterian Church in Sardinia. After marriage, she changed her membership to Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter and remained a faithful member until her death. Her service at Jehovah included membership in the health ministry for many years, as well as captain for Jehovah's Calendar Rally.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Black (Daniel) of Columbia, Md., and Ernestine Reese (Wallace Jr.) of Gadsden; a son, Eugene Lemmon (Renee) of Goose Creek; two sisters, Ethel Byrd of Sumter and Eunice Scarbourgh of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a very special person who was like a daughter to her, Gloria Baker.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Muldrow, Johnny, Tillman and Lawrence Burgess; and four sisters, Carrie Burgess, Alena Henderson, Dorothy Yoes and Placelia Anthony.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the senior pastor Dr. Marion H. Newton, officiating, assisted by Minister Linda Speed, Dr. A.D. Robinson Jr. and Pastor Donnie Chambers. Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

The family received visitors at the home, 1013 S. Main St., Sumter.

EARLINE McCOY

SUMTER - Earline Spann Rose McCoy, 110, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at National Healthcare Center in Sumter.

Born July 28, 1900, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late Bungie Jeremiah and Mary Magdalene Burns Wells. She was the widow of Israel Noah Spann, Eddie Rose and Oliver McCoy. She attended Clarendon and Sumter county schools. Mrs. McCoy was a member of Berea Seventh Day Adventist Church for more than 35 years, where she was honored as "Mother of the Year" in 1999. She received the "Star of the Century Award" from Community Long Tern Care of Sumter and "Queen of the Day" from National Healthcare Center. On Aug. 5, 2010, she was featured on the "Today Show" by Williard Scott, who recognized her 110th birthday.

Survivors include six children, Sadie McCray and Corine Belser, both of Baltimore, Md., Ethel Wright of Sumter, and Samuel Jerome Rose (Louise), Irvine Spann and Franklin Rose, all of Jersey City, N.J.; a son-in-law, Nathaniel Williams of Fort Washington, Md.; two daughters-in-law, Joyce Spann and Delores Peggy Spann, both of Baltimore; three stepchildren, Anne M. Nathaniel of New York, Oliver McCoy of Sumter and Geneva Gamble of Maryland; 31 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; 65 great-great-grandchildren; seven great-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at Berea Seventh Day Adventist Church, 675 S. Lafayette St., Sumter, with Pastor Robert Green Jr. presiding, assisted by Pastor Lloyd Johnson, eulogist, Elder Ray Brunson, Elder Joseph Taylor, Pastor Archie Temoney Sr. and Pastor Lillian Reynolds. Interment followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Berea Seventh Day Adventist Church, 675 S. Lafayette St., Sumter, and National Healthcare Center, 1018 Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.

The family received friends at the home, 210 E. Bee St., Sumter, SC 29150.
